modified and re-detailed Moebius kit in 1:4105 scale

And here it is: my modified Moebius Galactica. With permission of Frank Winspur of Moebius Models I show a way to modify and re-detail the kit. Additional to the kit I used some styrene, brass, photoetched parts by PGMS Paragrafix (I only used the hangar bay interior), replacement guns by Timeslip Creations and custom printed decals by JBOT Decals.

2003's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
- modifying and re-detailing the Moebius kit to the CGIs of Zoic Studios -

building process:

First - I scaled and printed the Zoic orthos and started measuring and comparing... I wanted to armor plates to be ontop of the ribs, so I drilled and cut space underneath the plates:

I also started sanding off the lower plating. These will be replaced by styrene sheet or PE's. Not decided yet. The battledamaged Galactica as seen later in the show has a slightly different plating + some areas that are not covered any more:

The middle-part needed to be shorter and reduced in height.

I kind of hated this area here, because the ribs MUST go underneath the armor plating, so same procedure - drilling, cutting, sanding.

And here's a comparison shot (before/after modification)

Here's the crucial area - where the front parts joins the fuselage. Different to what the instructions say I glued this one before I attached the rest of the head.

sanded the edges smoothly:

The head-neck-joint need A LOT of work. The head needed to ... - be in-line with the neck - 2 mm lowered - have parallel ribs with the neck's ribs - fit to the previously attached lower part of the alligator-head

Before attaching the upper head section, the underside needed some re-detailing...

... as well as the lower head section. The main antenna is completely missing. Smaller ones will be added later.

The hangars... well... The hangar doors look cool, but do not match the Zoic CGI images... Moreover, an additional 1mm height is need.

Here you can see that I drilled and sanded the ribs to go underneath the armor plating and removed and re-designed the hangar doors. Additional ribs added to the inside. New armor plate will be added later.

Here I took a photo of the tools I used for re-creating the ribs:

I cut the landing bay decals to shorten them and after attaching them I sprayed them with 70/30 matte clear coat/light grey for the scale effect.

interior parts added

The landing bays are a bit too long, so I cut out one element of ribs:

The bigger triangular door required a new window for the museum hangar

Modified hangar-housing, rising of the arm-attachments

Tried some details on the hangar-housings attempt to drill triangular holes into the hangar for the viper launchtubes.

Test-fit of hangar... The shape of the arms needs some correction as well does the positioning and attachment to the hangars.

almost done with scribing panel lines, detailing and re-shaping... Test-added some antennas and the few armor plates on the head-section:

...

finished detailing... primed and applied some different grays...

...

...

...

For the side of the flightpods I used a scratched Moerser Karl-part in that tiny scale (quite difficult work) and a 1:700 PE ladder to get the stripe next to the nameplate:

a bow shot: Note that all colored areas are sprayed with clearcoat+gray for the scale-effect:

battle damage and altered armor plating

Here is the battle damage on the flight pod. I tried to make the plating look like bent inbetween the ribs:

I printed the letters for the nameplate on self-adhesive transparency film and cut them out - one by one... what a stupid job

after that I colored that area and applied the custom printed nameplate-decal by JBOT: (the original ones were too big)

Here's how the decal looks like in 2D. You can also see how the clear styrene window works on the (almost) finished model. Replacement guns by Timeslip Creations added:
