X-Wing Red Two
Improving Fine Molds 1/72
This is my attempt to make the Fine Molds` 1/72 X-Wing look more authentic. References are the ILM 1/24 X-Wing Hero models of Red one, Red two and Red Five.

The complete fuselage has to be made thicker by given an extra mm on each side and bending the upper fuselage by about 1,5mm at the cockpit area. Glue borders on upper fuselage are cut and new shape bent by styrene pieces.
To get the laser cannon tubes 1- 1,5 mm nearer to the wing ends the area is given a new glue line.
When building Red two the torpedo launch tubes have to be laid back by 1,5 cm. The old ones need to be filled and sanded and new ones to be drilled into the lower fuselage at correct position.
The nose cone needs a new shape. The new one should be slightly more flat and extended to the fuselage. Only exception: Red 3
Engine nozzles should be drilled out to become thinner and given the shape of the F-4 Phantom engines that were used on studio filming miniature. I used a small Dremel cutting disc for creating the tiny cuts at the nozzles’ ends.
The Engine intakes get some detail. It’s impossible to re-create the Saturn V-parts in this tiny scale, so I took parts of a 1/1250 Bismarck to match the results.
The cover of the inner frame (on studio model) is sanded down and created new by sheet styrene. It got correct shape and position. Note: Shape of this part is quite different when building Red one, three and five.
Red two also has a special nose cone intake. It is laid back and more shallow than on the other X-Wings.
The canopy has been stripped off its window glass and flattened by 1 mm in the middle. It also has to become broader in the middle because of the new shape of the upper fuselage.
Cockpit has been modified: The pilot seat got a longer back and different angle and the instrument board has been sanded down and built new from scratch. I used the decals provided by the kit for the pilot’s instruments.
Note the new position of the pilot seat. It raises higher to the canopy and leans back further than the kit part.
Primed: You can see new shape and details better when in one colour.
White mixed with smoke grey and the yellow-grey in contrast.
Red markings and other coloured patterns painted on.
Additional decals applied.

The R2-Unit is seperated from the kit original kit part to give it a different angle and raise it's position in the X-Wing.
